The cell culture laboratory provides « customized » cellular engineering services including the production monolayer cultures as well as 3D tissue models using primary cells or immortalized cell lines. This 'customized' approach is unique in its kind allowing customers to order cells and tissue models 'on demand' in accordance with their specific needs.
Sterlab innovative technology is based on human tissue development at the air liquid interface and on the use of a defined medium that allows total differentiation of the tissues. That differentiation can be identified by the expression of specific proteins in different cell layers.
In the Biorice Project, the role of Sterlab is the development, the optimization and the validation of in vitro methodologies for evaluating the skin sensitization activity and potency of chemicals and finished products based on the use of Langerhans Cells in human reconstructed epidermis, with multiple endpoint analysis, time and concentration response curves. The culture conditions will be optimized to obtain an in vitro model that exhibits a normal epidermis stratification with Langerhans Cells in the suprabasal cell layers. The method will be validated using a set of reference chemicals known to be sensitizers. The reference chemicals include sensitizers having different sensitization classification, not sensitizers but irritating chemicals. Validation phase will be carried out under the experimental conditions previously optimized.
